Movies at the Historic Avalon Theater

Here are some upcoming events at Washington's historic Avalon theater, located at 5612 Connecticut Avenue, NW, just south of Chevy Chase Circle.

Playing only through Tuesday is Never Let Me Go starring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley.  As children, Ruth, Kathy and Tommy, spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.

Opening on Wednesday, November 10th is Morning Glory with an all star cast including Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, and Diane Keaton. When a hard-working TV producer is fired from a local news program, her career begins to look as bleak as her hapless love life. Stumbling into a job at “Daybreak” (the last-place national morning news show), she decides to revitalize the show by bringing on a legendary TV anchor. He refuses to cover morning show staples like celebrity gossip, fashion and crafts or work with his new co-host, a former beauty queen and longtime morning show personality. As the anchors clash, the producer's blossoming love affair with her fellow producer begins to unravel.

The Social Network will continue to play throughout the week. Hereafter will play only until Tuesday.

On Wednesday, November 10th at 8 pm the Lions of Czech Film series presents Kawasaki's Rose. Pavel Josek, an eminent scientist and former dissident, is due to receive a state honor for bravery. He is loved by his wife and adored by his daughter Lucie. During the filming of a television documentary about his life, it comes to light that at the beginning of the 1970s—under pressure from the secret police—he played a part in the discrediting of a former friend, who was ultimately forced to emigrate. The family drama sheds light on the practices employed by the secret police to discredit its opponents.

On Sat, Nov 13, at 10:00 AM their Weekend Family Matinee program presents one live performance by The Great Zucchini with Barry the Magician.  The cost of tickets is $8.50 or $6.50 for Avalon members.

As the temperatures drop, stop by the Avalon Cafe and warm up with special treats for autumn, including vegetarian chili and hot apple cider. For more information visit the Avalon's website.
