Recommended: Window Companies

Our companion email list, the Cleveland Park Listserv, is a treasure trove of recommendations. We want to share on All Life Is Local, on a periodic basis, the best recommendations that have been posted on the Cleveland Park Listserv. You'll be able to search All Life Is Local for "contractor," "plumber," "computer tech," "auto body shop" -- whatever you need. The search box, in case you have trouble finding it, is to the right and down a bit.

Here are the answers I received when I inquired about window companies some months ago.

Wheaton Door installed storm windows in our current and previous apartments.  We have never had a problem with any of the windows.  We recommend them highly:  http://www.wheatondw.com

We used Dennis Dunn of QWD in Beltsville for 5 attic windows recently and were pleased with his work.  His crew was very good.  Dennis is the manager and get him for estimating if you can.  He pointed out things that other companies had not which were important for a good job.  Our contractor had used him 6 years ago in our kitchen which is how we got to know him.  Here are his contact numbers

I have been very satisfied with The Window Man, based in Virginia. The fiberglass replacement windows they installed for me have performed very well. Their installation was prompt and clean. I felt the price was fair. http://www.thewindowman.com/

I am having some windows replaced at my house tomorrow by AAA Enterprises.  They did some windows and major remodeling for me in the past.  Their prices were the best, and the work was great.  The person to contact is Fernando Garcia 703 898 8041.

I haven't replaced my windows but I did get all new window screens and I was very happy with the company that installed them.  I had several companies come out and give me estimates and I found that the follow-up left a lot to be desired.  My big problem was the screens had to pass muster for the historic aspect which was no easy task.  In any event, The Window Man in Virginia did a great job.  They came when they said they would, promptly gave me an estimate, and then came and installed the screens, which look fantastic. I also priced some windows from them but ended up deciding just to go with new screens.  Here's their web site: http://www.thewindowman.com Don't know if your apartment is within the bounds of the historic district which limits what you can do but good luck.

I ended up going with QWD and am satisfied so far (we'll see what happens in the winter!) The agent and workmen were responsive, and careful and neat. Just one workman started the job and we could see that it would take quite awhile even though we have just 4 (very wide) windows. So the company sent more men and it went fairly quickly. The agent responded to all our questions, and the men returned to take care of the little things we pointed out on the walk-through. The big storms this summer were a good test of the windows, and there was no leakage. It's much quieter in the apartment now. All in all, a good experience. The man we dealt with is Jim Brooks, 703-222-6712; jbrooks31 @ cox.net; http://www.windowscontractor.com.
