Recommended: Roofers

Our companion email list, the Cleveland Park Listserv, is a treasure trove of recommendations. We want to share on All Life Is Local, on a periodic basis, the best recommendations that have been posted on the Cleveland Park Listserv. You'll be able to search All Life Is Local for "contractor," "plumber," "computer tech," "auto body shop" -- whatever you need.

Try Rasevic construction.  Here is Darryl Hawthorne's number 301-370-2210.  He is one of their best roofing guys and he serves as a consultant for other roofing & construction companies.  When Darryl is finished your roof will not leak!

We have slate roofs, as well, and have been happy with Fletchers. They are a pretty small operation, though, so it can take them a while to do routine maintenance, although they get there for emergencies (part of why it can take a little while to get to yearly check-ups!).

Try Jack's Roofing.  Ask for Justin Decker.

I've used Rose Roofing and Jack's.  Both are good.  On our major roof I used Jacks a few years ago and they had to replace sky lights.  They were good, nice to work with and  Rated high by checkbook.

We've been very satisfied over the years with the Samuel Boyd company.

I'm real happy with Boyd Roofing. They took good care of the roof on the CoOp when I lived on Porter and they've done good by me in my house in Shepard Park, slate roof, phone: 301.386.5800, fax: 301.386.5804

We were very satisfied with Katchmark

If you are getting estimates from at least three companies (we did and we were glad of that), you may want to consider an estimate from  www.maggioroofing.com in Takoma Park, MD. Their website gives some pretty good info. Maggio Roofing did our flat roof --not slate-— about three years ago. We had three estimates and theirs was in the middle in cost.  Been in business for 30 years they say, present owner about 15 years. If you read the description of the five or so sales people on their web, I would be inclined to call and insist on the one whose credentials impress you the most. We did not do that and I wish we had.  Roof so far is fine but who knows what it will be like 5, 10, 20 years out?  Now that I say that, I can't even remember how long the warranty lasts.

We did not have a subscription to Checkbook Magazine at that time. But what I've noticed since we did get a subscription is that I trust more companies that have the higher approval rating only if they also have a relatively high number of raters.  It seems one thing to get a high rating from 10 people but quite another to get a high rating from 250 people.  [Elizabeth's note: the ones I listed as highly rated on Checkbook all have 100+ ratings for exactly this reason!] Don't know how you find out who the best slate roofers are in the area? Probably some companies specialize more in slate or maybe exclusively in slate. Good luck.

We strongly recommend Maggio Roofing.  We called them last winter when the ice storms ruined our roof, gutters & down spouts.  They came quickly, assessed the damage, made emergency repairs and then helped us through the insurance process that otherwise would have been a nightmare.  Their crews were outstanding & their front office staff very helpful.  The quality of their work was excellent as was the clean-up when all was done.  We could not have asked for more.  Call Scott at 201-891-1390.

Try Don Hoover, nice to deal with. Folksy.  Phone: (301) 441-2712

  1. Thanks for the recommendations. Roof repairs and replacements should be entrusted to professionals who can work on them more efficiently.

  2. Right on, Freddy! Well, you also have to consider the contract price on roof repairs and/or replacements. A costly estimate should come with a service package that is worth the price.

  3. Good analysis, Herb! Replacement is the best solution if the roof cannot be brought back to its original state. Having it replaced would be the best option, as compared to maintaining it every now and then.
