Recommended: Oral Surgeons

Our companion email list, the Cleveland Park Listserv, is a treasure trove of recommendations. We want to share on All Life Is Local, on a periodic basis, the best recommendations that have been posted on the Cleveland Park Listserv. You'll be able to search All Life Is Local for "contractor," "plumber," "doctor," "computer tech," "auto body shop" -- whatever you need.

What follows is a compilation of the oral surgeons our neighbors referred. I left messages over the weekend and received a very prompt response from Dr. Gustavo Mongelos, who actually examined me on Saturday morning, took x-rays, prescribed antibiotics for the infection, and will extract my tooth later this week. His office was impeccably clean and his staff cordial, warm, and professional. I was extremely impressed with Dr. Mongelos professionalism and the sophistication of the technological equipment.

1. My dentist Dr Shub works right on Van Ness. He is a one stop shop and does everything himself from fillings, cleanings, root canals, extractions and crowns and is extremely gentle. Here is a link to his information. My wife and 11 yr old son both go to him as well.

2.. I went to Travis Patterson of Whiston, Patterson & Corcoran in Arlington when my root canal failed. I remember the extraction as being surprisingly inexpensive -- maybe $300? Of course, the treatment plan for the replacement implant is much more, but he was good with the extraction.

3. My stepdaughter just had all 4 of her wisdom teeth -- two of which were severely impacted (one sideways, in fact) -- removed last month. The total cost, including anesthesia was just about $2000., which we thought was very reasonable, due to the fact that this was done by an oral surgeon who's top notch.

The oral surgeon of whom I speak is Dr. Christopher Bonacci, whose office is on Ropute 123 in Vienna VA. Dr. Bonacci's not only an oral surgeon, he's also a medical doctor, and we went to him, because he came very highly recommended by our personal dentist -- who's also our family friend.

We knew our own dentist/friend wouldn't steer us wrongly, so we consulted with and used Dr. Bonacci, even though he didn't participate with our insurance, and we had to pay out of pocket. Prior to consulting with Dr. Bonacci, my stepdaughter was scared to death about the procedure, but she turned out to have had a very good experience overall. We're so very grateful that Dr. Bonacci was the oral surgeon we used.

My husband and I suddenly had to dash out of town to Michigan to attend to a major medical emergency with my 83 year old mother, just before my stepdaughter was to have her oral surgery. Despite the fact that her dad and I weren't able to come back in time to accompany our stepdaughter (who's 20, by the way) to her oral surgery, she actually felt comfortable enough going through the oral surgery with Dr. Bonacci, even though we weren't here. As for Dr. Bonacci and his staff, well, they couldn't have been more professional and caring for our stepadaughter in our absence, and we wouldn't hesitate to use him again if ever we need an oral surgeon.

So, perhaps you might consider checking out Dr. Bonacci, too. With or without insurance, at the very least, it would be well worth your while at least to consult with him. Here's a link to his website: http://www.drbonacci.com.

4. Washington Hospital has a Dental school and they will do extractions for $50 or so. Then you can go through the implant process. They'll do an implant and then your dentist has to do the crown.Good luck. Washington Hospital Center. Nesiba Juzbasic scheduler, 202.877.7396, 110 Irving Street, NW, Washington DC 20010 Note: Suite GA 144

5. I cannot recommend an oral surgeon, but I am sad to say that I certainly warn you of one: Dr. George Grillon of Bethesda extracted my wisdom teeth three years ago and it was a horrific experience. He was gruff, dismissive, and his understanding of pain management (in my case at least) left much to be desired.

6. Dr. Gustavo Mongelos just extracted two teeth, andit was not painful. He and his office help are very caring and considerate. He is on Delta Dental. And he is very conveniently located near the Van Ness metro stop, rightnext tothe CVS, at 4301 Connecticut Avenue NW, Suite 144, (202) 362-1024.

  1. Thanks for these wonderful recommendations. A good dental surgeon is hard to find these days. Some people can't find one for themselves. But the one you find is gonna be your best buddy for a lifetime. It's just like getting a wife, haha. People would want to hear the experience of patients with these doctors. I hope they can give some testimonials.
