Friday, October 24 from 9 AM - 4:30 PM, “Healthy Food, Healthy Cities, Healthy People,” an Urban Agriculture Symposium at UDC. Sessions on natural food production, food preparation, and distribution. Saturday, October 25 at 8:30 AM, DC Audubon Society hosts a Rock Creek Park bird walk, followed by the annual membership meeting. Free, but reservations requested at http://bit.ly/1wpEKCu. Saturday, October 25, 11 AM - 2 PM Community Zoo Day hosted by the Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home, Friendship Children’s Center & Northwest Neighbors. Village intergenerational art activities: paint a canvas or make a dazzling spin art piece to take home; help paint a life-size animal statue in the garden; visit the Resident Art Gallery to view contemporary artwork created by the talented artists of the Home. Baby farm animals & pony rides. Moonbounce, Balloon Typhoon, and face painting. Refreshments: popcorn, hot dogs, pizza, snacks, drinks. No admission fee. Small cost for rides, activities, & food. Saturday, October 25 from 2 - 4 PM, Spooky Pooch Howl-o-ween celebration at Hillwood. Stroll the wooded trails opened specially for this event, compete in the costume contest, play “tricks for treats”, enjoy refreshments for the spooky pooches. Saturday, October 25 from 5 - 8 PM, Oktoberfest at St. Dunstan’s -- an evening of brats, beer and music! Go through the spooky haunted house with the kids. Sunday, October 26, 2 PM - DC Legends and Lore (part of the DC Reads 2014 series) Discussion of this year’s DC Reads selected novel, The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears, by Dinaw Mengestu. The story, set in contemporary Washington, is about an Ethiopian immigrant who owns a grocery store in the Logan Circle neighborhood -- his only companions two fellow African immigrants who share his nostalgia and longing for his home continent. As his environment begins to change, hope comes in the form of a friendship with new neighbors Judith and Naomi, a white woman and her biracial daughter. But when a series of racial incidents disturbs the community, he may lose everything all over again. Copies of the novel are available to check out or download from the library. If you enjoy reading about local history and hometown Washington, DC, then the Cleveland Park Library's DC Legends & Lore book discussion group is for you! The group meets once a month on a Sunday. Sunday, October 26 at 10 AM, The Hyman S. and Freda Bernstein Jewish Literary Festival present “The Great Children’s Read: Bringing Books to Life.” Book fair with a storyteller, sing-along, crafts, and more. Special guest: Clifford The Big Red Dog! We are collecting new or gently used books to donate to Reading Partners, an organization that helps children become lifelong readers. Ages 2-8. Free. Monday, October 27 at 6:30 PM, Morgan Gendel, Hugo award winner for “Star Trek: The Next Generation”episode “The Inner Light” will discuss his inspiration for the show and offer a behind-the-scenes look at Star Trek, after a screening of the episode. (In this episode Captain Picard finds himself living on the planet Kataan where he is known as Kamin a flute-playing iron worker with a devoted wife. His friends keep telling him he is having delusions when he insists that he is actually a starship captain. Tuesday, October 28 at 6:30 PM, “Remembering the MacArthur Theater,” a talk by author Robert Headley on the landmark movie theater in Palisades -- part of an oral history initiative on DC’s neighborhood movie theaters, presented by the DC Independent Film Festival. Free. At Palisades Community Church, 5200 Cathedral Avenue NW.

Tuesday, October 28 at 7 PM, City-Wide ANC Candidates’ Debate. All 413 candidates running for the 294 Advisory Neighborhood Commission seats will gather for one unified debate. Each candidate will have 48 seconds to introduce himself or herself and say what he or she is for or against. Following the introductions, each candidate will have 18 seconds to answer a question that was pulled from a hat and handed to each candidate upon arrival. Questions were collected from randomly chosen DC public schoolchildren, and include old favorites such as “What’s your favorite color?” and “Boxers or briefs?”The debate will be held in the 350-seat 2nd floor lecture hall at UDC; seating for candidates is first-come first-served, and latecomers will have standing room at the back of the hall. As there is no room for the public, a live,closed circuit TV feed will be set up in a lecture room on the 3rd floor. Thursday, October 30 at 4 PM, "How the Discovery of Life Beyond Earth Will Transform Our Thinking" - a lecture by Astrobiologist Steven J. Dick, who holds the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology. At the John W. Kluge Center.in room 119 of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. SE.
