Still Life With Robin: A Night Out With Food & Friends

Usually my column is about some little annoyance of modern life, or some bit of local color, or something quirky or amusing I’ve picked out of the week’s news or events. Pretty light fare, on the whole. My topic today could be characterized that way – it’s about something fun to do – but with a more serious purpose lurking underneath. I would like to urge everyone to go out to eat on Thursday, April 23. Why? Because it's Dining Out for Life, one of the easiest and most enjoyable fundraisers of the year. If you think there will come a point next week when you don’t feel like cooking or eating at home, just train your sights on Thursday. You can reserve a table now, if you want to be sure that your favorite participating restaurant is not booked up. There are over 90 restaurants to choose from – visit http://www.diningoutforlife.com/washingtondc/restaurants to view the field. Click on the one you like, make your reservation (for lunch or dinner or both), enjoy your meal out on Thursday, and when you pay your bill, you will know you are also helping to deliver food and comfort and support to people with serious diseases (AIDS, cancer) though Food and Friends

The site is set up to let you choose a restaurant by cuisine, by neighborhood, or by the percentage of sales the restaurant is donating to Food and Friends (from 25 percent all the way up to 100 percent).

If you’d like to know how the money is used without spending time combing over the Food and Friends website, here’s the story in 75 words or less: “Food & Friends is the only nonprofit organization in the Washington, DC area providing daily, home-delivered, specialized meals, groceries and nutrition counseling to individuals who are battling HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses. The funds raised through Dining Out for Life allow Food & Friends to continue to provide these critical services at NO COST to our clients.”

So if you like eating out … or even if you don’t and only rarely let others do the cooking for you, make Thursday, April 23 your date to be served, so that others can continue to be served good meals in their own homes.
