What Society Values

by Barry Deutsch

  1. After 20+ years in the classroom (I'm retired, now), I agree that the teacher pay is "squat," particularly in light of how much initial education and required continuing education one has to do on their own nickel. The working conditions weren't great, either.

But, thankfully, the rewards for being a teacher are "priceless!" I wouldn't have traded my time in the classroom with the munchkins for anything.

On the other hand, I gleefully would've traded away a whole slew of ridiculous administrators with whom I had to deal during my career. And thank heavens I retired before Michelle Rhee flew into town on her broomstick!

  2. I hope that incoming mayor Gray devotes the kind of attention to the schools that Fenty did, and is able to make hard choices like Fenty and Rhee did.
