Stay In! And Go to the Zoo at the Same Time - See 5mo-old Xiao Qi Ji's Livestream Debut!

Xiao Qi Ji - Smithsonian National Zoo
by Peggy Robin

The “Stay In!” event for the week would, in normal times, be the headline event of the "Get Out!" events column, as the National Zoo would usually invite the public, with great fanfare, to the public debut of their newest panda cub -- as they've done with each of Mei Xiang's previous cubs, Tai Shan, Bao Bao, and Bei Bei.

During the pandemic this will take place livestreaming at the Zoo in Virtual Reality….but under the present circumstances, that still counts as one of our in-the-neighborhood events. (We just have to make due, these days!)

If you ever went to see Bei Bei, Bao Bao, or Tai Shan when they were first introduced to the public in Real Life, you know this will be time well spent!

Here’s the invitation from the Smithsonian National Zoo:

Giant Panda Cub Xiao Qi Ji Livestream

Spend some quality time with giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji in the first FREE livestream event broadcasting from inside the David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat on Wednesday, Jan. 27, from 1-1:15 p.m. ET.

In a mix of prerecorded and live segments, the panda team will take you behind the scenes at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. You’ll experience an up-close, real-time look at Xiao Qi Ji as he walks, climbs, tumbles and explores his indoor habitat. See how the Panda Cams are operated, take a virtual tour of the panda house and get the answers to some of your most-asked questions.

Please note the length of time spent with Xiao Qi Ji during the livestream will be approximately 5 minutes. If you are unable to tune in, a video recording of the livestream event will be available post-broadcast.
