DCPL's 3rd Annual ROAR Contest |
Let me start by praising the DC Public Library System. It serves the public with an incredibly wide range of great programs, dedicated staff, excellent communication with the public (just read any issue of the weekly e-newsletter "Beyond Words" and you'll see what I mean) and a brilliant library renovation/rebuilding program that has given us some world-class architectural gems. So, in that context, when I select one thing about DCPL to praise to the skies, you might be expecting me to point to a high-culture literary program, or maybe an art exhibit, like the current, and stunning one on Leonardo Da Vinci's drawings; instead, I've picked a kid's contest, ROAR, in which kids (well, that includes adults who like to act like kids sometimes) are invited to make a short video of themselves doing their best dinosaur roar.
We don't even have a clue as to what any sort of dinosaur would have sounded like! For all we know, they may have lacked any structure in their throats to make the slightest sound! But don't let that stop you from entering! Or from being as imaginative as possible about recreating your own version of a roaring prehistoric something-0-saurus.
Want some inspiration? Watch this hilarious video of last year's winners:

If you watch the winners' video all the way through (and I promise you, it's time well spent!) you'll see that there's just one winner from Woodley Park and one from Tenleytown -- none from Cleveland Park.
I really hope to see some Cleveland Parkers in the winners' mixtape this year!
C’mon, Cleveland Park, REPRESENT!

The announcement of the current contest, which was posted on the Listserv earlier this week (Wednesday, June 21 (Message #202401 ), is copied below:
DC Public Library wants to hear you roar! Once again, we are calling on dinosaur fans of all ages to share their best impressions of their dinosaur breed of choice. Do you have a killer pterodactyl shriek, a mean tyrannosaurus growl or a wicked brontosaurus grunt? Record a video of your best dinosaur roar (10 seconds or less) and submit your entry here. The submission deadline is August 1.
This contest is open to ALL ages. Learn more at https://www.dclibrary.org/news/dinosaur-roaring-contest or visit Tenley Library.
