Still Life with Robin: That was some wild weather week!

 by Peggy Robin

I'll start with the most relevant quotation from the Cowardly Lion:

"Unusual weather we're havin', ain't it?"

That's the best line movie line for a weird period in January that started a little over a week ago when we were all bundled up in in our heavy coats and mittens, out in 18 degree cold with five inches of snow on the ground, to yesterday, when it was a record-breaking 80 degrees in the sunshine, and people went jogging by in their tank tops and running shorts.

Here's your snowstorm photo gallery:

....and here's your record-shattering 80 degree day news from yesterday, Jan 26

But how about that spooky transition between the snowfall and the heat wave -- the day of dense fog. The Washington Post had some eerily beautiful fog photos: see  https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/01/26/dc-fog-monuments-photos/ , my favorite of which was of our little friend. the cherry tree down by the Tidal Basin, known and beloved as Stumpy:

What about tomorrow? It will be like January again, high temperatures in the '40s -- and a lot of rain tonight and through tomorrow, enough to trigger a flood watch.

Friday, February 2 is Groundhog Day, and let's hope that springlike weather (meaning, within the normal range of spring temperatures!) is just a few more weeks away.
