Grand Opening of the Newark Street Dog Park on Saturday

Update: the opening time has been moved to11am.

The grand opening of the Newark Street Dog Park at 39th and Newark Streets, NW will take place this Saturday, September 11 at 9:30 AM 11 AM. Mayor Adrian Fenty, officials from DC Parks and Recreation, and other elected and administrative officials are scheduled to be on hand to officially open the park. Everyone --whether you have four legs or two-- is welcome to attend.

For such a simple thing, the dog park has been very controversial among neighbors, especially between the park's proponents and the people who use the community garden and who say that wandering dogs have pooped and made a mess of the gardens. The park's opponents have also pointed to the cost of the dog park, about $400,000. It's taken about a decade to go from planning the park to its opening. A decade, hmm. Sound like any Giant supermarket we know?
