Compilation of Rug Cleaners

All Life Is Local has a companion listserv,, which regularly receives queries from members looking for recommendations. From time to time on All Life Is Local, we like to post a compilation of recent, helpful recommendations on a particular topic on the listserv -- in this case, rug cleaners.

** Six enthusiastic recommendations for Manoukian Brothers (compiled into one write-up):

Hands down, the place to clean that rug is at Manoukian Bros.: (Just one of several good links.) We have been using them for years. They will pick up and deliver or you can take the rug to their shop on Georgia Ave. Access the parking lot off Kalmia Avenue.

I've used Manoukian Brothers to help several clients with their rug cleaning and all have been very happy with the results and pricing.  Washington Checkbook gives them excellent reviews Here are some reviews on Yelp: .... They charge $2.20 per square foot when they pick up, and they do a very good job. Their number is 202-882-7847. They used to be on Columbia Rd. in Adams Morgan, but now have a shop on Georgia Avenue in Takoma.

We've used Manoukian Brothers for years and they are great. They even offer a pick up & delivery service. Our rug is also hand-made, wool, and oriental; it always comes back to us looking perfect.

** Try Jahann Carpets on Howard Ave in Kensington. I've used them for years. They are good and reliable.

** We are using and would recommend Mahmood Foroosh,, in Kensington, 301-942-2885. We have just had an initial installment of four orientals cleaned, saw the results on Saturday at the shop, and were very pleased. The price varies by the size but also type of rug (wool, silk, etc.) and how dirty it is. They also do hand repairs, including work on repairing or replacing fringe, reweaving holes or spot dying worn sections, where the cross-weave shows through, that are calculated into the price. Foroosh is an older gentleman, and he and his wife are the business. They wash the rugs by hand. They came to the house, checked out the rugs, and described what would happen for each rug, then took them back to their shop. In addition to washing, we had fringe repaired, and it's impossible to tell where the old fringe ends and the new begins. And they got out spots in one rug that two other oriental rug cleaners (one on the compilation list) had not been able to remove. They're also doing appraisals, which have been eye-opening.

** I've used Keshishian's in Bethesda (just off Wisconsin) for repair work as well as cleaning of many of our oriental rugs. They will pick up and deliver too.

** I very recently used Andrews Upholstery and Carpet Cleaning,, 301 258 2778. They cleaned synthetic carpeting in our home in NW DC and cleaned an oriental runner by hand off premises. Very reasonably priced. Very good
results. Longstanding company that used to be owned by Andrews family but David and Denise Lundberg bought it about 15 years ago. 89% of 65 respondents in Consumer Checkbook's survey gave them high quality marks.

But in that same survey, Ayoub Carpet Service at 3856-F Dulles South Court in Chantilly, Va, 703 255 6000 received high quality marks from a whopping 92% of a whopping 720 respondents! That's an amazing tribute to something that that company is doing correctly. Their website is (I didn't see these ratings till today as I had used Andrews several times over the last 20 years.)

** Hadeed is great! (202) 678-1111

** Jennings Clean Care - (301) 333-5444 or cell (301) 535-4279.
