Cleveland Park Day Is On Today!

Just in case you were worried that the sudden arrival of November weather on October 1st would affect Cleveland Park Day, here's your reassurance from the organizers that all is on and it will all be fun -- if you dress warmly.

Celebrate 100 years of Cleveland Park, CPCA and John Eaton. Celebrate the arrival of Autumn, season colored leaves, Halloween, and harvest bounty. 

At 1pm, we open the moonbounces, dunk tank, cookie decorating, history exhibits, pottery painting, face painting, free food and drink, and more. 

At 2pm, Mayor Vincent Gray, Councilmember Mary Cheh and Principal Dale Martin of John Eaton will be speaking in the Park and Shop. 

At 3pm, free ice cream! The Friends of the Library will begin their annual Ice Cream Social at the library. 

All day, we'll have fitness and dance activities in the Park and Shop, the Hook and Ladder engine from the Fire Department, free food from local restaurants, and t-shirts designed by one of our own John Eaton students. President and Mrs. Cleveland will be welcoming guests, along with our beloved local clowns and McGruff the Crime Dog. 

The celebration wraps up at 5pm. Dress warmly.

Cleveland Park Day Includes Big Library Book Sale - Oct. 1st

Cleveland Park Day keeps getting better and better! Now the Friends of the Cleveland Park Library has announced a big book sale as part of the event. Here's everything you need to know:

Cleveland Park Day is Saturday, October 1st, and the Friends of the Cleveland Park Library will be participating with a Bag O’ Books Bonanza from 10:00am - 4:00pm on the 2nd floor of the Library. 

Fill a shopping bag with all the mysteries, romances, or science fiction books that will fit -- all for just $3:00! Select hardcovers and paperback in any combination. We'll supply the bags, courtesy of community-friendly Whole Foods in Tenleytown.  

Cleveland Park Day Is October 1st! One Week to Go

We're counting down the last seven days until Cleveland Park Day! This event is on Saturday, October 1st, from 1:00 to 5:00pm on Connecticut Avenue from Porter Street to Macomb Street. The service lane between Ordway Street and Porter will be closed to allow displays and activities.

This year it will be bigger and better than ever! (This is actually its second year in its current incarnation. There were Cleveland Park Days way back in the 20th Century, but we're not counting those.)

• National Zoo and community group tables
• Celebrations of the 100th anniversaries of the Cleveland Park Citizens Association and of John Eaton School, with cermonial readings by Councilmember Mary Cheh

You Are a Verizon Winner...NOT!

I won!  I won a free netbook from the Verizon drawing on Cleveland Park Day on October 3rd.  The Verizon store rep called me last week to give me the good news, but I was out of town at the time and so set the appointment for today, and went out in a cold rain to pick up my prize.  It was worth it for a free Samsung netbook valued at $469, wasn’t it?  I felt so lucky.

Here’s what I learned upon arriving at the store: “Free” actually means you get the prize only after you sign an agreement to pay $59.99 a month for broadband service for two full years.  That’s a total of $1439.76 to get something they billed as a “Giveaway.”  Okay, I said, then I’ll take it unactivated, and sell it to someone who wants to buy the contract. But that wasn’t an option. In other words, if I didn’t agree to pay the money, I got nothing at all.  As I opened my mouth to object, the sales rep said, “It said this on the form you filled out when you entered the drawing.”
