Make your reservations now for one of the best annual benefit events in DC, the Dining Out for Life day with over 100 participating DC area restaurants.  A portion of your restaurant check --from 25 percent to 110 percent, depending on which restaurant you choose-- will go to Food & Friends’ clients living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses throughout the National Capital Region.

Last year, more than 25,000 diners, restaurants and volunteers participated in Dining Out for Life®, raising more than $280,000 to support Food & Friends’  mission.

About Food & Friends: Food & Friends is the only organization in the Washington Metropolitan area providing home-delivered meals, groceries and nutrition counseling to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses free of charge.  Since 1988, Food & Friends has provided more than 15.8 million life-sustaining meals to more than 22,600 individuals.

Police/Crime Community Meeting Tonight at 2nd District Police Station

The Citizen's Advisory Council for the Metropolitan Police 2nd District monthly is meeting on Wednesday, August 22nd at 7pm. 

Please join your neighbors and representatives of the MPD's 2nd District, and the Assistant US Attorney for the 2nd District to discuss recent crimes and CAC sponsored events in support of the MPD in DC's Second Police District.

Learn How to Become a Responsible Neighborhood Watch Volunteer - May 8 at Police Station

Are you interested in helping the police keep your neighborhood safe?  Then come to the next Neighborhood Watch Training on Tuesday, May 8 at the Second District Police Station at 3320 Idaho Avenue from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. The training is free to anyone who wants to come learn the behaviors that criminals look for before committing their crimes. By learning what criminals look for, you can eliminate those behaviors and decrease your chances of being a crime victim. You will also learn how to be a block captain, if you are willing to take on that role for your block. We are hoping to have one person on every block of the city who will share information with their neighbors, and stay connected to MPD for up to the minute news about crime in the neighborhood.

Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Sat, April 28

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled the semi-annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, which will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 10am to 2pm.

This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

C.R. Gibbs is an author, lecturer, and historian of the African diaspora. A native Washingtonian, he grew up on Capitol Hill. Mr. Gibbs is the author of Black, Copper, and Bright: The District of Columbia's Black Civil War Regiment, and a co-author of Black Georgetown Remembered: A History of Its Black Community from the Founding of the "Town of George" in 1751 to the Present Day.

"Lafayette, We Are Here: A Story of a Family of Free Blacks in the City of Washington"
 by Donet D. Graves, Esq.

Donet D. Graves, a lawyer, is partner-in-charge at Buckley King LPA in Cleveland, OH. Mr. Graves is a descendant of the renowned nineteenth-century Washington, DC hotelier James Wormley. He has spent decades researching his family's historical presence in Washington, and is able to present an untold narrative of the role the Wormley family played in the civic, political, cultural, and economic life of the City.

"Sustainable DC" at Cleveland Park Library, Thursday, 7pm

The Cleveland Park Citizens Association is holding a meeting on the topic of "Making DC a Model Sustainable City." Mayor Gray is expected to announce his ambitious Sustainable DC initiatives next week. His goal is for DC to become a model of environmental sustainability for the country. The forum will also begin to explore what this might mean for our Cleveland Park neighborhood and other local neighborhoods.

Emancipation Day Observed Mon, Apr 16: No on Trash Pickup, Yes on Reversible Lanes

With this Monday, April 16 designated an official DC holiday, Emancipation Day (and it's the 150th anniversary, no less!), we are passing along two important reminders about the schedule for the day.


First, please note that all DC offices will be closed, including the DMV and the Fort Totten trash transfer station.


Second, DPW has announced that trash collection will "slide" to the next day.


Third, in recognition of the fact that Emancipation Day is not a holiday for federally or privately employed workers, rush hour lane reversals and rush hour parking enforcement will stick to the normal weekday patterns.

DPW To Observe Emancipation Day, Monday, April 16

DPW will enforce rush hour restrictions; sanitation services will be suspended for the day.

The DC Department of Public Works will observe Emancipation Day, Monday, April 16; however, rush-hour parking restrictions will be enforced. Vehicles violating these restrictions will be ticketed and towed. 


Please note: Other parking regulations, including expired meters, residential parking and street sweeping, will be suspended for the holiday.

Additionally, the Nationals will play Sunday, April 15 and Monday, April 16, so parking enforcement will occur both days in the Nationals Park neighborhood.

Sanitation services will be suspended for the holiday and will resume Tuesday, April 17.

• In once-a-week trash and recycling collection neighborhoods collections will "slide" to the next day, so Monday's collections will be made Tuesday, Tuesday's collections will be made Wednesday and so on.
• In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday and Thursday collections will "slide" to Tuesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.
• Street sweeping will be suspended Monday and resume Tuesday, April 17.

The  Fort Totten Transfer Station will be closed Monday, April 16 and reopen Tuesday, April 17 to residents between 1 pm and 5 pm.

Mac Users Group Meets on Saturday at CP Library

 

The National Capital Area Mac Users Group is meeting on Saturday, April 14, from 10 AM to 12 noon at the Cleveland Park Library, corner of Connecticut and Macomb NW.

April's meeting features NCA-MUG Executive Committee Member and Mac Guru, Paul Suh, who will lead a guided Big Mac Cat Safari, following the tracks leading from Leopard (OS 10.5), to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6), to Lion (OS X 10.7).

Town Hall Meeting on DC Zoning Changes, Apr 17 at 7pm

There will be a Town Hall meeting in Tenleytown giving residents an opportunity to discuss with DC zoning officials the proposed changes to the DC zoning regulations. Although the meeting was arranged by Tenleytown  neighborhood groups, the information is relevant to all DC residents.

The Washington International School is having its annual Spring Bazaar, and the whole community is invited!

Shop for books in English, French and Spanish at the used book sale. Stroll through the street bazaar and investigate treasures in the flea market. Casey Trees Offers "First Friday" Programs on Street Trees

The city of trees is becoming even greener. Streetscapes are being designed to grow massive trees that use clean polluted runoff to grow larger and endure the trials of urban street life. Mayor Gray to Hold Ward 3 Meeting on City Budget April 4

Have concerns about the DC budget? Mayor Gray and key cabinet members will be holding a series of meetings with citizens ward by ward to present and discuss the budget. Here's the invitation from the Mayor's office to attend the one in Ward 3.

DC STEM Fair on Saturday, March 24 at Wilson High School

We are happy to pass along this invitation to attend the expo of DC students' science, technology, engineering, and math projects this Saturday at Wilson High School:

Ward 2 State Board of Education Representative Mary Lord with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education would like to extend a special invitation to the District of Columbia's Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Fair (DC STEM Fair).

In its 66th year, the fair will give students in grades 6-12 a chance to showcase their research skills and compete for a variety of awards and prizes offered by various government agencies, businesses and professional associations. The Fair is an excellent opportunity to see the District's next generation of innovators, learn about STEM programs, camps, and jobs from field professionals, and explore the exciting world of science and engineering.

Coordinated by DC Public Schools and the DC Science Teachers Association, the DC STEM Fair will occur on:
