Recommended: Overseas Mover

Our companion email list, the Cleveland Park Listserv, is a treasure trove of recommendations. We want to share on All Life Is Local, on a periodic basis, the best recommendations that have been posted on the Cleveland Park Listserv. You'll be able to search All Life Is Local for "contractor," "plumber," "computer tech," "auto body shop" -- whatever you need.

About a year ago we had my daughter's household goods packed, crated and shipped to London by Craters & Freighters. Their local number is 202-237-7447. They were efficient. Nothing broke. And everything cleared customs easily in London. I cannot give you any information as to the cost but I would guess that interstate and international shipping rates are pretty standard. The costs were borne by my daughter at the other end. Her only comment was, "Everything is unpacked and intact and I am drowning in a sea of bubble-wrap." All the boxes were loaded on a pallet and shrink-wrapped together with what seemed like a mile of plastic so nothing would stray. That is exactly how it was delivered in London. We would use them again.

We did a within-building move and were very pleased with Gulliver's Moving and Storage. They sent 3 men (we had a 2 bedroom apartment) who were all with the company for several years. It was a winter move. They did all the heavy lifting and carted lots of boxes which we had packed. We were pleased.

It may take a village to raise a child, but after recently selling our house, I think it takes a village to sell a house and move. We were so lucky to have tremendous help, much of which I found through this listserv. Thinking it might be helpful to some, I compiled a list of recommendations to help those who might be in similar situations.
We had help with house painting (both interior and exterior), a handyman, window washers, de-cluttering and moving, as well as an inspection and a real estate agent for the sale, all of whom I would highly recommend.
For painting, we used Orlando Angel, whose name I found through this listserv. Orlando was such a pleasure to work with and really came through for us. We were on a tight timeline, wanting to get our house on the market as quickly as possible. He insured a quick turn around by having plenty of workers on the job. He and his crew were careful, had a high level of attention to detail and were reasonably priced. Orlando can be reached at oeangel @ aol.com.
