Clear Out Unwanted Electronics at Hearst School's E-cycling Event on May 5th -- And Pick Up Some Free Software, Too!

Save yourself the drive to the Fort Totten Trash Facility across town: This Saturday you can e-cycle your old computers, audio and other equipment, right here in the neighborhood, and at the same time pick up some gently used books, and some free software. This event benefits Hearst Elementary School at 3950 37th Street NW. Here's the flyer:

Come to Hearst Elementary's Spring E/Free-Cycle and Used Book Sale!

Are you wondering what to do with that old computer that is gathering dust in your basement? Do you have old, obsolete, or broken electronic equipment? Would you like to donate working electronics to a neighborhood free-cycle or find an item for yourself? How about buying a bag of gently used books? On May 5, 2012 from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, Hearst will hold its fourth annual neighborhood e-cycle/free-cycle/used book sale at the school. We will be collecting the following electronics for a new life in our free-cycle or for transport to Ft. Totten for recycling:

And, new this year, we will also have a used book sale (in keeping with the idea of re-use) -- so don't forget to bring a reusable bag or two for carrying goodies to take home!

Returning this year: the Free Open Source Software (FOSS) table, put on by Kevin Cole and Sanjay Jain. Here's their description of how FOSS works:
Free Open Source Software allows you to use older computers for longer, thus reducing e-waste. We will have Ubuntu CDs to give away. See Bill Adler's comments about Ubuntu at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cleveland-park/message/7190  (You will need to subscribe to the Cleveland Park Listserv --it's free and open to all at www.cleveland-park.com-- to access this message.)
If you'd like to try Ubuntu before the event to see if your equipment can be used for a few more years, you can download it from ubuntu.com. For computers older than 8 or 10 years, I recommend puppylinux.org. If you have any difficulty downloading the software or creating a CD, I'd be happy to let you have one before the event. You can email Sanjay Jain at oss.cleveland@yahoo.com

Community Forklift Garden Party & Spring Sale on March 31

Photo by Spitfire via Wikimedia Commons
We're happy to pass along the invitation to this eco-supportive community based event:
Hi!
Ruthie here, from the nonprofit Community Forklift. I want to personally invite you to our 3rd Annual Garden Party and Spring Sale at Community Forklift on Saturday, March 31.

Starting at 9:00 am, we'll have new, gently-used and vintage garden items for sale, including garden tools, landscaping materials, planters, and architectural artifacts.
Beginning at 12:00 noon, this festive day includes a potluck lunch, door prizes, live music, and juggling lessons from Deciduous Dave.
From 2:00 – 5:00 pm, the Neighborhood Farm Initiative will be offering gardening advice and free flower and vegetable seeds. Dogs and other friendly pets are welcome. (All animals must be on leashes). Attendees (pets included) are encouraged to wear vintage garden party attire to help create a springtime garden party atmosphere. Wear your fanciest hats, seersucker suits or favorite overalls and muddy boots!
Note to early birds: gardening supplies and tools will not be sold before March 31 at 9:00 am.
To get all the details, visit CommunityForklift.com. We're located about 30 minutes away from Woodley Park and you can find driving and biking directions on our website.
As you may know, Community Forklift does not sell forklifts. We're a nonprofit thrift store for home improvement, where folks can donate or shop for gently-used building materials, hardware and architectural salvage at a fraction of retail prices. The unusual name refers to our mission: we are "lifting up local communities" by reducing waste, creating green jobs, and making repairs affordable.
Thanks,
Ruthie Mundell

Three Historic Tours Put On By DC Preservation League: July 12, 14 & 16

DC Preservation League has three events coming up. The first is for anyone interested in learning more about the energy efficiency of historic houses in DC; the second is for history buffs, fans of Gothic architecture, and those with an interest in design of sacred spaces; the third is a walking tour of St. Elizabeth's, a national historic landmark soon to be redeveloped. Of course, you may not know how fascinating you will find any of these subjects until you attend and learn more about them.  Here are the details for each event.

Tuesday, July, 12, 2011
6:30 - 8:00 PM
Historically Green Open House
1724 Park Road, NW
Mt. Pleasant, DC

The early 20th century saw the advent of a new type of Washington row house that was designed with more street frontage, a shallower floor plan, and a covered front porch. These innovations provided better lighting and air circulation within the structure -- a necessity in humid Washington summers -- and encouraged community relations.

Today, these porches serve their original purposes of animating streets and engendering community while the structure provides a renewable canvas for those looking to promote sustainability and energy efficiency in an historic context.

Join developer Jimmy Edgerton (jWEST Solutions, Inc.) and architect, Dave Bloom (DB Architecture) for an open house showcasing the design and technology solutions utilized in this recent condo conversion to retain historic integrity while encouraging an energy-conscious lifestyle.

Light refreshments. Free to DCPL members, $20 for non-members.

----------

Thursday, July 14, 2011
6:00 - 8:00PM
A Civil Union: Marrying the Historic and Modern
St. Thomas' Parish
1772 Church Street, NW
Near Dupont Circle

In 1970 St. Thomas Episcopal Church was destroyed by arson, leaving only the Altar and parish hall as remnants of the 1894 Gothic structure. Following the fire, the congregation renovated what remained of the parish hall, and converted the space where the edifice once stood to a park for the surrounding community to enjoy.

Join Matthew Jarvis of Auraform Architects for a presentation on the history and artifacts gathered for inspiration in creating a vision for St. Thomas' new sanctuary.

$15 DCPL members, $25 non-members. Space is limited, so register soon.

----------

Saturday, July 16, 2011
10:00am - 11:00am
Walking Tour of St. Elizabeth's West Campus

Join the DC Preservation League in partnership with the General Services Administration for a walking tour of the historic west campus of St. Elizabeth's Hospital, a National Historic Landmark.

Tours of the St. Elizabeth's campus are being offered on a limited basis depending on the course of construction activity. Tours will include an historical overview of the site, access to the point, and exterior views of the Center Building and Burroughs Cottage.

Space is limited and reservations are required. Because of security issues walk-ons will not be permitted on the tour.

This tour fills up fast, so reserve your spot now.

For more information on any of the above, or to become a member of DCPL, contact Amanda McDonald, Events and Administrative Manager, DC Preservation League, 202-783-5144.

Metro Holding Open Houses for Rider Input in Mid-May

Metro will be holding its first-ever combined Open Houses and Town Hall Meetings prior to official public hearings, to give Metro riders the opportunity to speak out about Metro service, changes, and problems.  Here's how Metro's official press release couched it:
"Metro staff members will be available at Open Houses for one-on-one conversations about Metro service and programs. Town Hall Meetings will give you an opportunity to talk about the future of the system with Metro leaders, including members of the Metro Board of Directors."
So...we riders will finally get "an opportunity" to meet face to face with the exalted "Metro leaders"...even the members of the Board of Directors! Next, we learn of the following "options" (translation: "cuts in service" and "fare increases") in the FY2012 budget.
  • Increasing the Metrorail train wait times on weekends
  • Eliminating the Metrobus E6, K1 and N8 lines
  • Restructuring the Metrobus M4, V7, V8, 70 and 71 lines
  • Eliminating the 50 cent discount on certain Anacostia bus routes, resulting in MetroAccess fare increase, and modification of the Anacostia station bus transfer discount program
All Open Houses will be from 5:30-6:00 p.m. followed by the Town Hall Meetings. The public question-and-answer period will be from 6:00-6:45 p.m. The Public Hearings will start at 6:45 p.m. There are a total of six events being held on four dates at locations in Maryland, Virginia, and DC. The two DC events are listed below. For the full schedule of all the events go to: WMATA's website and then open the PDF document link to "Dates, Locations, and Directions to the Public Hearings."

Tuesday, May 17

St. Mary's Armenian Apostolic Church
4125 Fessenden St, NW
Washington, DC 20016
Metrorail stop: Friendship Heights
[Note: This is the Metro stop suggested in Metro's press release. The meeting location is actually equidistant from Tenleytown and Friendship Heights, about a half-mile walk from either station. In other words, the meeting is being held at a place not especially convenient to either station.]

Thursday, May 19

Matthews Memorial Baptist Church
2616 Martin Luther King Jr Ave, SE
Washington, DC 20020
Metrorail stop: Anacostia
[Note: Although the suggested Metro station is only one-third of a mile away, it is not clear that there is a pedestrian sidewalk crossing Suitland Parkway. Google Maps suggested that walking this route would be hazardous.]

Forest Hills Park is the only outdoor facility in Ward 3 without a recreation center, and so unlike other parks, it don't have a central building. This little neighborhood gem, located at 3200 Chesapeake Street, NW (east of Connecticut Avenue) has hosted thousands of toddlers since the community rebuilt it in 2001. This past year, the Friends group paid for repairs to the equipment, secured new swings, received an ANC grant for a solar compactor to control trash, and this spring, will be replenishing the sandbox. Donations to support any of these projects are very much welcome!
